BTCC.B: What It Is and How It Works

The Purpose Bitcoin ETF (BTCC.B) is a physically-backed spot Bitcoin ETF managed by Purpose Investments Inc., a Canadian asset manager founded by Som Seif. It holds actual Bitcoin — no futures, no synthetic exposure — and trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canadian dollars.

BTCC launched on February 18, 2021, becoming the world's first exchange-listed spot Bitcoin ETF. The US Securities and Exchange Commission didn't approve a spot Bitcoin ETF until January 2024 — nearly three years later. Canada was first, and BTCC was the product that opened the door.

The ".B" in BTCC.B refers to the non-hedged CAD unit. There is also BTCC (the original CAD non-hedged unit) and BTCC.U (USD-denominated units). Most Canadian investors buying through WealthSimple will see BTCC as the default ticker. The underlying Bitcoin is custodied by Gemini Trust Company, a regulated US digital asset custodian.

Historical first: BTCC was the world's first spot Bitcoin ETF, approved by the Ontario Securities Commission in February 2021. With over five years of live NAV data and the largest AUM of any Canadian Bitcoin ETF, it has the deepest market and the longest institutional track record in the asset class globally.

TFSA, RRSP, and FHSA Eligibility

BTCC.B is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, a designated stock exchange under Canada's Income Tax Act. This makes it a qualified investment eligible for all registered accounts:

Direct Bitcoin purchased on WealthSimple Crypto or any Canadian crypto exchange cannot be held in registered accounts. ETFs are the only path to tax-sheltered Bitcoin exposure for Canadians — and BTCC.B, as the original Canadian Bitcoin ETF, is fully supported by all major Canadian brokerages.

RRSP note: For RRSP investors, BTCC.B is eligible, but its 0.75% MER is meaningfully higher than FBTC (0.39%) or BTCX.B (0.40%). The 0.36% MER difference compounds significantly over a long-held RRSP position. Choose based on your cost sensitivity — BTCC.B wins on liquidity, FBTC wins on cost.

BTCC.B Pros and Cons for Canadian Investors

Pros
  • World's first spot Bitcoin ETF — unmatched track record since February 2021
  • Largest AUM of any Canadian Bitcoin ETF (~$2.5B CAD)
  • Deepest liquidity — tightest bid-ask spreads, best execution for large orders
  • Eligible for TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, and all registered accounts
  • Available on WealthSimple and all major Canadian brokerages
  • Purpose Investments is a reputable Canadian asset manager
  • Over 5 years of live performance data through multiple Bitcoin cycles
Cons
  • 0.75% MER — meaningfully higher than FBTC (0.39%) and BTCX.B (0.40%)
  • MER drag compounds annually against your Bitcoin position
  • Gemini custody vs Fidelity's self-custody (FBTC) or Coinbase (BTCX.B)
  • You own fund shares, not Bitcoin itself — no self-custody path
  • Premium/discount risk on NAV in volatile markets
  • Counterparty risk: Purpose Investments and Gemini Trust

The core question for Canadian investors is whether BTCC.B's liquidity advantage is worth a 0.36% annual MER premium over FBTC. For most individual investors making regular purchases through a registered account, it isn't — the bid-ask spreads on FBTC and BTCX.B are tight enough that the liquidity edge disappears. For institutional block trades, BTCC.B's depth is a legitimate advantage.

How to Buy BTCC.B Through WealthSimple

BTCC.B vs Other Canadian Bitcoin ETFs

ETF Ticker MER AUM Custodian Verdict
Purpose Bitcoin BTCC.B 0.75% ~$2.5B CAD Gemini Largest, most liquid
Fidelity Advantage FBTC ~0.39% Fidelity Digital Assets Lowest MER, best value
CI Galaxy BTCX.B ~0.40% Coinbase Custody Strong track record
Evolve Bitcoin EBIT ~0.75% Coinbase / Gemini Same MER, smaller AUM

BTCC.B and EBIT share the same 0.75% MER tier, but BTCC.B has significantly larger AUM and deeper market liquidity. Against FBTC (0.39%), BTCC.B's MER premium costs roughly $360/year on a $100,000 position — that's real money that competes with Bitcoin's long-term return. Most cost-sensitive investors building a long-term registered account position will find FBTC or BTCX.B more appropriate.

When BTCC.B makes sense: You're placing large orders and need tight spreads. You specifically want the longest-track-record Canadian Bitcoin ETF. You're working with an institution or advisor that prefers the most established product. Otherwise, the MER difference points toward FBTC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MER for BTCC.B?

The Purpose Bitcoin ETF (BTCC.B) has a management expense ratio of 0.75% per year. This fee is silently deducted from fund assets and reduces your effective Bitcoin position over time — you won't see a line item on your account statement, but the drag compounds annually.

What is the difference between BTCC and BTCC.B?

BTCC and BTCC.B are share classes of the same fund — both trade on the TSX in Canadian dollars. BTCC is the original non-hedged CAD unit. BTCC.B is a non-hedged CAD unit issued under a different prospectus structure. For practical purposes, most WealthSimple investors will see BTCC as the primary ticker. Always verify the ticker and currency in WealthSimple before placing your order.

Can I hold BTCC.B in my TFSA, RRSP, or FHSA?

Yes. BTCC.B is a TSX-listed Canadian-domiciled ETF, making it a qualified investment eligible for all registered accounts: TFSA, RRSP, RRIF, RESP, RDSP, and FHSA. It's available through WealthSimple and all major Canadian brokerages.

Is BTCC.B worth the higher MER compared to FBTC?

For most individual investors accumulating through a TFSA or RRSP, no. FBTC at 0.39% MER saves you 0.36% per year — roughly $360 annually on a $100,000 position, compounding over time. The only scenario where BTCC.B's premium makes sense is if you specifically need its superior liquidity for large block trades, or if you're an institutional investor with a strong preference for the fund's longer track record.

Who is Purpose Investments?
